Somewhere in Time at the Grand Hotel

Main Street Mackinac Island (This really feels like time travelling)

One of my favorite movies is “Somewhere in Time”  with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.  It is such a romantic movie.  In the movie Christopher Reeve’s character, Richard Collier,  travels back in time to the year 1912.  The movie is a little mind-boggling.  In the present, 1972, Richard Collier is a young playwright who just produced his first show.  At the opening of his show an elderly women approaches  him and puts a watch in his hand  and says “come back to me.”  She then leaves.
Years later, Richard Collier is staying at the Grand Hotel, and he  sees a photograph on the wall of a beautiful young woman.  He realizes that she is the elderly woman he met eight years earlier.  He falls in love with the woman in  the picture and wants to travel back in time to be with her.
I also love the movie because the woman’s name is Elise.  (same as mine except spelled differently)  The music throughout the movie is The 18th variation of Sergei Rachmaninoff‘s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini .  It is hauntingly beautiful.  I actually have a hard time listening to the music because it is so emotional and powerful.
I have always been intrigued with the thought of possibly time traveling.  Maybe one day we will be able to!  I believe anything could be possible.  I have always wanted to travel back in time,  not to the future.  If you could pick a time period to time travel to what would you choose?  And what location would you like to travel to?

This is the Grand Hotel where “Somewhere in Time” was filmed.  It is on Mackinac Island in Michigan.  There are no cars on the island.  Transportation is horse and buggy or bicycle.  When you get off the ferry you are greeted by horse and buggy taxis to take you to your hotel.  In the past 125 years the island has virtually not changed.   Mackinac Island is famous for their fudge and the island has many sweet shops where you can sample it.  I read that when you are on the island you truly feel like you have traveled back in time!

Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is being added to my list of places that I would love to visit!

  1. Intriguing article reminiscent of other movies. A person travels to the past to capture love. It shows that you are willing to travel to the ends of the earth (or the end of time) to find that one pure love of your life. Love had no boundaries. Great article.

    1. This is such a beautiful thought! What one person will do for love. Thank you for your profound comment!!
